I AM A PREACHER!
The One whom God has sent speaks God’s Words, because God gives Him the fullness of His Spirit. – John 3:34
I felt drained. I had just given a whole-day recollection and even if I had been giving talks since I was a youth, I still avoided the label “preacher.” Why? Because I felt unworthy. Hence, I didn’t internalize my mission.
Then I got a phone call. “Brother Obet,” said a man’s voice, “who am I is not as important as what I am about to say. I now have a happy family, am now a loving husband and father, an auto shop owner and so blessed in life. Most importantly, I’m now free — from my past and from the prison I came from. Brother, I was one of the Malabon City Jail inmates you gave a recollection to. I was converted through your talk and testimony. I just called to thank you and tell you that you are such an anointed preacher. God is using you to help people like me.”
I froze. I couldn’t believe what I heard. The very title I was avoiding was the same ministry God was using to touch and change people’s lives. Only then did I internalize my call. Yes, I am a preacher! Not because I am worthy but because I am a forgiven sinner overwhelmed by God’s grace and entrusted with His ministry. Obet Cabrillas
REFLECTION:
Do you “call” His call?
Lord, let me live up to my calling today. Amen.

NICODEMUS
Nicodemus appears only three times in the Gospel of John: when he visits Jesus during the night, when he defends Jesus’ right for a fair trial before the Sanhedrin and when he joins the burial entourage of Jesus.
Nicodemus’ inclusion in Jesus’ story shows that not all the members of the Sanhedrin were hostile toward Jesus. Even among the ruling political party members, Jesus had admirers and, perhaps, even followers. This is important because when we think of the Sanhedrin, the chief priests, the scribes, and the Pharisees, we are inclined to consider all of them as enemies of Jesus. But Jesus was able to capture some hearts among them, like He did with Nicodemus. They listened to Jesus and wanted to learn from Him. Gradually, they came to believe in Jesus as the Son of God or, perhaps a more correct way to put it is, faith in Jesus as the Son of God gradually came to them.
Faith comes upon us even as we come to faith. In another part of John’s Gospel, Jesus said that no one knows the Son except the Father. Unless the Father Himself leads us to faith in Jesus, we cannot believe in Jesus as the Son of God.
While faith is our response to God’s revelation, it is also God’s gift to us. We cannot believe without God willing it so. But God wills for us to believe because He wants everyone to be saved and salvation comes only through Jesus, His Son.
God gave the gift of faith to the Sanhedrin and the others but they wasted such a precious gift. Nicodemus is an example of one who valued, and responded to that gift. He searched for answers to his questions. And He asked, not to contest faith in Jesus, but to confess faith in Him.
Theology – the study of God – is fides quaerens intelectum (St. Anselm). It is “faith seeking understanding.” Faith is evidently presupposed because it has already been given. But it seeks to understand because it wants to respond. Nicodemus personifies this definition. Fr. Bobby Titco
Reflection Question:
Does my faith seek understanding?
Enlighten my heart and mind, O Father, with the light of the Holy Spirit and lead me unto a more genuine faith in Your Son, Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

One of the fundamental truths of human dignity is that we all have a right to freedom of religious belief and the expression of that belief provided that it does not harm another person’s rights. This means that while we can demand the right to believe what we want we must also give that same right to others. When there is a conflict of beliefs we must look to see whether or not human dignity and rights are respected by both sets of beliefs.
Acts 5:27-33
27 When they had brought them in and made them stand before the Sanhedrin, the high priest questioned them, 28 “We gave you strict orders did we not? To stop teaching in that name. Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and want to bring this man’s blood upon us.” 29 But Peter and the apostles said in reply, “We must obey God rather than men. 30 The God of our ancestors raised Jesus, though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree. 31 God exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior to grant Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins. 32 We are witnesses of these things, as is the holy Spirit that God has given to those who obey him.” 33 When they heard this, they became infuriated and wanted to put them to death.

(R) 18 [19] The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves. 19 [20] Many are the troubles of the just man, but out of them all the LORD delivers him. (R)

Jesus is clearly making a distinction between two very different levels of revelation. There is revelation that comes from humanity and revelation that comes from above or the divine. It is the revelation from the divine that has the greater authority and, in some cases, supercedes that from below. It is critical that we see the preaching of Jesus on a new level and authority with regards the revelation He brings.
John 3: 31-36
31 The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things. But the one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. 33 Whoever does accept his testimony certifies that God is trustworthy. 34 For the one whom God sent speaks the words of God. He does not ration his gift of the Spirit. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given everything over to him. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.

Bible Reflections from Kyregma

A TASTE OF HEAVEN
How will you ever believe me when I tell you about the things of heaven? – John 3:12
Derek and Amanda Ross, a lovely young American missionary couple, invited me for dinner in their home. Derek left his profitable construction business in the US to serve in the Philippines through True Love Waits International. They are Baptists but they don’t talk about doctrines or denominations. They simply want to encourage young people to live pure lives — to give them the message that True Love Waits. (Their website has an incredibly cool name: www.wagmuna.com.) Derek works with Catholic and non-Catholic schools, teaching young people to stay pure before marriage.
One thing struck me about them. They are such positive people! Derek kept praising his Filipino co-workers and sharing how he loved our culture. They kept talking about their big and small blessings. Gosh, it was so refreshing being with them.
When I’m with great people like Derek and Amanda, I cannot help but get excited about heaven. Because heaven is about being with great people for all eternity.
Friend, when people are with you, do they believe more in heaven?
Or less of it? Bo Sanchez
REFLECTION:
Does your life reflect heaven?
Lord, help me to be more grateful, positive and affirming. Help me to bless the world that it may understand the things of heaven.

SNAKEBITES
Fr. Robert Reyes, otherwise known as “The Running Priest,” is known for his collection of exotic animals, including various reptiles. He once told me that not all snakes are venomous and that there are only very few snakes with fatal bites. He added that several snakes have bitten him already. But still, I will never have a snake for a pet. Will you?
If each time we sin against God and against one another a snake would bite us, we would have died a long time ago, if not from the venom of very few deadly snakes, at least by infection from snakebites. But no snake appears each time we sin, so we’re not afraid to sin.
Sin is like venom. It is fatal. It kills. Once it spreads, there is no stopping its deadly consequence. Sin consumes the sinner just as Venom (of Spiderman 3) consumes whoever the “symbiote” touches.
Scripture tells us, “The wage of sin is death” (Rom 6:23). Death is sin’s natural consequence. As death is inevitable when venom flows freely through a person’s bloodstream so is death inescapable for a person living in sin. I mean here, as the Apostle Paul refers to in Romans 6:23, not only physical but spiritual and eternal death as well.
The death of Jesus on the cross is the antidote for the poison of sin because sin is disobedience to God while the death of Jesus is obedience to Him. We apply medical remedy to someone bitten by a snake. To someone afflicted by sin, only the merits of Jesus apply themselves. “We have all fallen short of the grace of God” (Romans 3:23). We all need the merits of Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins.
While effective antidote for snakebites may not be always within our reach, the merits of Jesus are always available to us. They are also consistently effective, for He is the same yesterday, today and forever. But the merits of Jesus must be consciously and sincerely accepted. St. Augustine said, “God who created you without asking you will not save you without consulting you.” Now, God consults us. Do we want to be saved? Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
The wage of sin is death. But Jesus has the antidote for sin. Do I want to be healed? Do I really want to be saved?
Jesus, heal me. Jesus, save me. I love You, Jesus. Increase my love for You.

One of the most important measures of Christian conversion is the amount of change hat happens after. True conversion is always accompanied by change and Christian discipleship, that lifelong walk we have all begun is all about ongoing conversion. This should eventually result in us becoming more and more like Christ.
Acts 4:32-37
32 The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. 33 With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. 34 There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, 35 and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need. 36 Thus Joseph, also named by the apostles Barnabas (which is translated “son of encouragement”), a Levite, a Cypriot by birth, 37 sold a piece of property that he owned, then brought the money and put it at the feet of the apostles.

Jesus is somewhat astounded that a teacher of the Law does not understand the concepts He is talking about! I wonder how well we know the truths of our faith? I wonder how well we can defend Church Teaching if it is challenged by those around us? It is each one’s responsibility to learn more about our faith so that we can both better apply what we learn to our lives and also defend it against those who attack it.
John 3:7b-15
7 “‘You must be born from above.’ 8 The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” 9 Nicodemus answered and said to him, “How can this happen?” 10 Jesus answered and said to him, “You are the teacher of Israel and you do not understand this? 11 Amen, amen, I say to you, we speak of what we know and we testify to what we have seen, but you people do not accept our testimony. 12 If I tell you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13 No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in him mayhave eternal life.”

Bible Reflections from Kyregma

PHILIP, ANDREW AND THE LAD
“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish…” – John 6:9
Jesus asked, “How are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?”
Philip, frowning, replied, “Impossible! We can’t feed these people.” Philip saw things as hopeless situations, maybe a reflection of his own pessimistic attitude.
Andrew, instead of providing a solution, pointed, “That boy there has something. Ask him. I can’t help you.” He placed the burden on somebody else.
The lad was young and insignificant. He offered, “Here Rabbi, I have some bread and fish. If it will ease the hunger of the other children, let them have this.”
Are you like Philip who faces life with negativity, seeing no end to your woes and bringing down everybody around you?
Are you like Andrew who stays in the sidelines and points to somebody else to carry the burden and then blame others when things go wrong?
Or are you like the lad who just keeps quiet and works to contribute, offering what little you have for the sake of others?
Remember, what little you have, when offered to Jesus, can bless a multitude. Jun Asis
REFLECTION:
Are you like negative Philip, finger-pointing Andrew or the selfless lad?
Lord, help me be like the lad who looks at the solution rather than focusing on the problem and my own selfish interest.

NOT ALL HUNGERS
Jesus is the Bread of Life. He satisfies our hunger. But not all that we hunger for, mind you.
In the Gospel today, Jesus is pleased to satisfy the hunger of the crowd by offering them the bread of the poor. But He doesn’t satisfy their hunger for power by offering Himself to be their king.
Many subscribe to the claim, Vox populi vox Dei. But we have today a case where the voice of the people is certainly not the voice of God. Let us not be quick to believe that the voice of God is always manifested by the clamor of the people. There are times when the people are already adversely affected by their hunger that their voice no longer echoes the voice of God. Beware of self-serving politicians who use this cliché in favor of their own hunger and greed for power.
If Jesus gave in to the people’s clamor that He be their king because He has miraculously fed them, then Jesus would have been more hungry than the people themselves. Then Jesus would have actually been satisfying His own hunger for power.
The human hunger for dominance is never Jesus’ hunger. Thus, Jesus offers Himself instead as the Bread of life by making Himself the servant of all. His lordship is one of caring for and serving others, of laying down one’s life so that others may live. He who is the Lord of all is actually the servant of all. We see in this the most distinct sign of God’s ultimate reign, where all will be satisfied and no one will languish in the painful curse of any form of hunger.
The Gospel ends with Jesus’ refusal to be made king. To miss this point is to fail to understand the entiremiracle. The point is the service, not the food. It is not the food multiplied that fed the hungry crowd. It is the service rendered that fed them. The miracle is not when people are fed. The miracle is when people allow themselves to be bread broken for others, after the example of Him who came that we may have life and life in abundance (cf. John 10:10). Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
Am I fed by others or am I feeding others?
Lord Jesus Christ, You are the Bread of Life, as You feed me with Your own Body and Blood, transform me so that I may become what I received: food of the life of the world. Amen.

Gamaliel gives wise counsel in today’s reading. If the Christian Gospel is true, then no one with any integrity would want to stand in the way of its proclamation. However, if it is false, it will die a natural death like all other lies. That the Gospel is still here 2000 years later suggests that it is built on truth.
Acts 5: 34-42
34 A Pharisee in the Sanhedrin named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, respected by all the people, stood up, ordered the men to be put outside for a short time, 35 and said to them, “Fellow Israelites, be careful what you are about to do to these men. 36 Some time ago, Theudas appeared, claiming to be someone important, and about four hundred men joined him, but he was killed, and all those who were loyal to him were disbanded and came to nothing. 37 After him came Judas the Galilean at the time of the census. He also drew people after him, but he too perished and all who were loyal to him were scattered. 38 So now I tell you, have nothing to do with these men, and let them go. For if this endeavor or this activity is of human origin, it will destroy itself. 39 But if it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy them; you may even find yourselves fighting against God.” They were persuaded by him. 40 After recalling the apostles, they had them flogged, ordered them to stop speaking in the name of Jesus, and dismissed them. 41 So they left the presence of the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they had been found worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name. 42 And all day long, both at the temple and in their homes, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the Christ, Jesus.

G O S P E L
This miracle of the feeding is the only one of Jesus’ miracles to occur in all four Gospels. I think this tells us that the miracle firmly imprinted itself in the minds of those who witnessed it. They could not possibly forget such a remarkable thing as the multiplication of the food for so many people. Even witnessing such a great miracle was no guarantee that the people would interpret it well. Jesus had to flee in order to avoid politicizing His message by being forcibly crowned king.
John 6: 1-15
1 Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee. 2 A large crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick. 3 Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish feast of Passover was near. 5 When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” 6 He said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred days’ wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little.” 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people recline.” Now there was a great deal of grass in that place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted. 12 When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples, “Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.” 13 So they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat. 14 When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, “This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world.” 15 Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain alone.

Suffering for God’s Glory

Meditation

Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.

If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.

For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?

FOCUS ON THE ESSENTIAL
“Choose seven men among you who are known to be full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, and we will put them in charge of this matter.” – Acts 6:3
Ricky is the head of an organization. He wants to lead by creating a positive image of his organization for his industry partners. Unfortunately, Ricky has a tendency to do micromanagement in all sectors of his company and ends up dictating decisions that his mid-level administrators should be doing.
But whenever a course of action does not go the way he wants it, Ricky blames everyone except himself. Soon enough, his subordinates began to feel a sense of incompetence and their morale started to deteriorate. Ricky eventually lost his influence over his people and their commitment as well.
Why? Because Ricky lost focus of what was essential: His leadership.
In today’s reading, we are reminded by the Apostles to focus on our primary mission — the preaching and living of God’s Word. They also emphasized the importance of delegating work to those who are wise and Spirit-filled, as well as knowledgeable, skilled and competent in their respective fields.
The Apostles knew the basics of organizational management.
The Apostles were leaders. Red Cerrer

REFLECTION:
What is my primary task at work? How can I be a leader to others?
Lord, teach me to lead as the Apostles did.

GOD, NOT GHOST
If you see someone walking on the water, you would think you are either dreaming or seeing a ghost. But Jesus is no ghost and seeing Him walk on the water is not a dream. To see Jesus walk on the water is to witness something rather ordinary for Him to do.
Recognizing Jesus as the one who walks on the water, however, is a different matter. It is an act of faith.
Interestingly, the disciples, who spent many days and nights with Jesus, failed to recognize Him when they saw Him walk on the water. Instead, they thought He was a ghost.
Water is a very powerful symbol for the disciples who were Jews. It symbolizes chaos as it was prior to the creation story in the book of Genesis. It reminds the Jews of the great flood during Noah’s time and, therefore, of death. It brings to mind slavery as well because the Jews had to cross the Red Sea to escape the Egyptians. For the Jews, water represents chaos, death and slavery. It was God who hovered over the water, caused the water to rise, and divided the water. God alone walks on water as God alone has power over chaos, death and slavery.
The Jews believed that anyone who sees God dies. Moses himself saw only the back of God. Coming from God’s presence later on, Moses had to put a veil over his face when he went down from the mountain because the Israelites could not look at the radiance of his face.
When Jesus walked on the water, could it be that the disciples were afraid that they were actually seeing God face-to-face and therefore they would die? If we were to see Jesus face-to-face today, it requires faith to believe that He alone can change chaos to order, death to life, and slavery to freedom. To see the presence of God in the midst of our personal and collective experience of chaos, death and slavery, we must have faith. Fr. Bobby Titco

Reflection Question:
Do I see God in the chaos, death and slavery inside and outside of myself?
Father, You have given us Jesus to put order in our chaos, bring life in our death, and give freedom in our slavery. Help us to see Jesus always with the eyes of faith and recognize Him as Lord forever and ever. Amen.

The apostles recognized that their primary mission was prayer and preaching the Gospel. Administrative tasks like the distribution of food to the widows and the poor are important but preaching and prayer are their priority. Let us pray that the bishops of the Church today will never neglect their primary mandates in the face of so many administrative demands.

Acts 6: 1-7
1 As the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. 2 So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. 3 Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, 4 whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” 5 The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6 They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them. 7 The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly; even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith.

God’s perfect love casts out all fear. This is one of the principles of Christian life that we need to be constantly reminded about so that we can keep a proper perspective on the events around us. If we can approach life in the knowledge that God loves usand is with us we will never fear anything He asks us to do.
John 6: 16-21
16 When it was evening, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 embarked in a boat, and went across the sea to Capernaum. It had already grown dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea was stirred up because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they began to be afraid. 20 But he said to them, “It is I. Do not be afraid.” 21 They wanted to take him into the boat, but the boat immediately arrived at the shore to which they were heading.

Another Joke

Give the Lawyer a Hand

A young trial lawyer was defending a man accused of burglary, known for being witty (and the judge knows this) tried yet another one of his creative defenses. The judge, while not known for having a sense of humor, decided to here the young lawyer out.

“While my client admits he did, in fact, reach his arm into the window and removed a few trifling articles. However his arm is not himself, and I fail to see how you can punish the whole individual for an offense committed by just his limb.”

“Well put,” the judge replied. “Using your logic, I sentence the defendant’s arm to one year’s imprisonment. He can accompany it or not, as he so chooses.”

The defendant smiled. With his lawyer’s assistance he detached his artificial limb, laid it on the bench, and walked out.

Good reason

A man bought a new Mercedes to celebrate his wife leaving him and was out on the interstate for a nice evening drive.

The top was down, the breeze was blowing through what was left of his hair and he decided to open her up. As the needle jumped up to 80 mph, he suddenly saw flashing red and blue lights behind him.

“There’s no way they can catch a Mercedes,” he thought to himself and opened her up further. The needle hit 90, 100…..Then the reality of the situation hit him. “What am I doing?” he thought and pulled over.

The cop came up to him, took his license without a word and examined it and the car.

“It’s been a long hard day, this is the end of my shift and it’s Friday the 13th. I don’t feel like more paperwork, I don’t need the frustration or the overtime, so if you can give me a really good excuse for your driving that I haven’t heard before, you can go.”

The guy thinks about it for a second and says, “Last week my nagging wife ran off with a cop. I was afraid you were trying to give her back!”

“Have a nice weekend,” said the officer.
