Pope says U.S. society can undermine Catholic faith

By Tom Heneghan, Religion Editor Wed Apr 16, 9:37 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Pope Benedict tempered his praise for American religious tolerance on Wednesday with a warning that U.S. society can quietly undermine Catholicism by reducing all faiths to a lowest common denominator.

Addressing the nation’s Catholic bishops, the German-born pope said the U.S. Church could not drop its guard against relativism just because faith plays a larger part in public life in the United States than it does in more secularized Europe.

A strong individualist streak in American culture leads some Catholics “to pick and choose,” following Church doctrines they like and ignoring others, he said during a long speech on challenges facing Roman Catholicism in the United States.

“It is not enough to count on this traditional religiosity and go about business as usual, even as its foundations are being slowly undermined,” he warned the bishops gathered at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington.

The “American brand of secularism,” he said, “can subtly reduce religious belief to a lowest common denominator.”

Countering growing secularization in Europe has been a main theme of Benedict’s papacy. His comments on the United States have mostly been positive remarks on how it has separated church and state without driving religion from the public sphere.

The speech to nine U.S. cardinals and 350 bishops, his main opportunity to speak to leaders of his Church in America, revealed a deeper level of concern Benedict has about a superficial religiosity sometimes called “civil religion.”

“Faith becomes a passive acceptance that certain things ‘out there’ are true, but without practical relevance for everyday life,” he said. “The result is a growing separation of faith from life, living ‘as if God did not exist.”‘

“We have seen this emerge in an acute way in the scandal given by Catholics who promote an alleged right to abortion.”

“PREACHING LOST ITS SALT?”

Another sign is the continued drift of Catholics away from the Church, he said. According to a recent study by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, about 24 percent of Americans are Catholics but a further 10 percent are ex-Catholics.

“Do people today find it difficult to encounter God in our churches?” Benedict asked. “Has our preaching lost its salt?”

The pope said part of the problem was that American Catholics had left the “ghetto” of Catholic culture that reinforced religious practice among the immigrant communities that long made up the bulk of the faithful.

Those communities have assimilated in recent decades into the pluralist mainstream of this mostly Protestant society, where other faiths and fads compete for people’s attention.

“The Church in America,” Benedict said, “is faced with the challenge of recapturing the Catholic vision of reality and presenting it, in an engaging and imaginative way, to a society which markets any number of recipes for human fulfillment.”

A study issued just before Benedict’s visit showed many U.S. Catholics — especially younger ones — had only a shallow understanding of their faith.

While the Church teaches that the Eucharist is clearly the most important of its sacraments, only 25 percent of those polled thought so, according to the study by the Center for Applied Research into the Apostolate at Georgetown University.

Some 39 percent chose baptism as the most important sacrament and 26 percent picked marriage.

More Jokes!!

Live and Learn

Psychiatry students were in their Emotional Extremes class. “Let’s set some parameters,” the professor said. “What’s the opposite of joy?” he asked one student.

“Sadness,” he replied.

“The opposite of depression?” he asked another student.
“Elation,” he replied.

“The opposite of woe?” the prof asked a young woman from Texas.

The Texan replied, “Sir, I believe that would be giddyup.”

Have Some Perspective

A man walks out of a bar and sees a bum panhandling on the corner. The bum says, “Mister, can you spare a dollar?”

The man thinks a minute. Then he asks the bum, “If I give you a dollar, are you going to use it to buy liquor?”

“No,” says the bum.
The man then asks, “If I give you a dollar, are you going to use it for gambling?”

Again the bum says, “No.”
So the man says to the bum, “Do you mind coming home with me so I can show my wife what happens to someone who doesn’t drink or gamble?”

Joke Time Again!!

Listen Carefully

Osama bin Laden went to heaven and was greeted by George Washington, who slapped him and yelled, “How dare you try to destroy the nation I helped conceive?”

Patrick Henry then approached and punched Osama in the nose. James Madison entered and kicked him in the shin. An angry Thomas Jefferson whacked Osama over the head with a cane.

The thrashing continued as John Randolph, James Monroe and 66 other early Americans came in and unleashed their anger on the terrorist leader.

Suddenly, as Osama lay writhing in unbearable pain, an angel appeared. “This is not what you promised me,” said Osama.

“Come on, Osama,” the angel replied. “I told you there would be 72 Virginians waiting for you in heaven.”

A Beautiful Poem

I got a subscribed mail in my inbox.. Before I delete it I just want to share it to all of you!! I myself wrote poems too..hopefully I can share it with you next time!!

Read this, it is beautiful!!

You Can

If you can’t feed a billion people,
then feed just one.

If you can’t hire twenty million unemployed,
then hire just one.

If you can’t support an army,
then pray for one soldier.

If you can’t cure disease,
then visit one person in the hospital.
One smile provides healing.

If you can’t save the world,
then improve your community;
and if you can’t improve your community,
then help your next-door neighbor.

We can’t save the world,
but we can save those within hugging distance.

Don’t give up.
Don’t become overwhelmed.
We are responsible only for the people in our breathing space.

Charity begins with the next person you see.
Charity begins with just you and just me.
If everyone on earth felt this way, what kind of planet would it be?

Bible Reflections from Kyregma

HEAVEN ON EARTH

“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” – John 6:35
“The Mass — and I mean every single Mass — is heaven on earth.” That’s what Scott Hahn said in his book, The Lamb’s Supper: The Mass as Heaven on Earth.
Even if I try to attend Mass regularly, I sure don’t feel that way every time. I get sleepy, distracted, numb. Of course, I also feel great — sometimes.
But I try to attend Mass daily, not because of my feelings, but because I believe I meet Jesus there. When I’m happy, I give thanks. And when I’m tempted or down, then I literally run to Mass for help. Afterwards, I get insight, a sense that everything will turn out right or that I am not alone.
When Jesus promised to nourish us with Himself in the Eucharist, it covered every area of our lives: emotional, spiritual and financial.
Next time we go to church, let’s be more aware where we are and Who we’re seeing. We might just see heaven come down. Joy Sosoban
REFLECTION:
“It would be easier for the world to exist without the sun than without the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.” (Padre Pio of Pietrelcina)
Don’t let me attend Mass only out of duty, Lord. Let me love You in it.

WE LOSE PEOPLE WE LOVE

No one is dispensable. Each one of us counts. This is how God regards us. We are precious to Him. He loves us more than we know.
We only lose people we love. People we do not love do not count for us. We do not lose them because they do not matter to us in the first place. We do not notice the absence of people we do not love.
God loses us because He loves us. He loses us not because He does not care about us. He wants all men and women to be saved. But, as St. Augustine said, “God who created you without asking you will not save you without consulting you.” No matter how much God loves us, He does not force us to love Him back. If we stay away from Him, He follows us, He runs after us, and He even haunts us, but He never coerces us to remain in Him. His will is to love us, only to love us, always to love us.
Jesus came to personally tell us how much God loves us and so He wills that all men and women be saved. The Father’s will is for Jesus to save us and that not one of us be lost. Jesus gathers us in the Father’s love.
When we strive to preserve the gains of our salvation, we are like Jesus. When we exert effort not to lose anyone in our Christian community, we are like Jesus. When we value one another and never consider anyone dispensable, we are like Jesus. The name “Jesus” literally means, “God saves.” We continue to make the meaning of His name happen whenever we search out for the lost among us and love those who remain so that we may never lose them. For we lose only those we love. Fr. Bobby Titco
Reflection Question:
Is there anyone in my communitythat I am actually missing? Why?
Dear Jesus, You gather us together in the Father’s loving embrace. Preserve us from anything that may cause the Father to lose us. Deliver us from those who may snatch us from the Father’s love. Help us to search and bring back whoever He has lost and may we never be the cause of the Father’s losing any of His beloved children. Amen.
St. Gaucherius, abbot, pray for us.

1st READING
The persecution in Jerusalem will result in the preaching of the Gospel. Here we see that God is able to use even evil circumstances to spread the Good News. God will cause all things to work for the good of those who love and trust Him.
Acts 8: b-8
1 There broke out a severe persecution of the church in Jerusalem, and all were scattered throughout the countryside of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 Devout men buried Stephen and made a loud lament over him. 3 Saul, meanwhile, was trying to destroy the church; entering house after house and dragging out men and women, he handed them over for imprisonment. 4 Now those who had been scattered went about preaching the word. 5 Thus Philip went down to [the] city of Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah to them. 6 With one accord, the crowds paid attention to what was said by Philip when they heard it and saw the signs he was doing. 7 For unclean spirits, crying out in a loud voice, came out of many possessed people, and many paralyzed and crippled people were cured. 8 There was great joy in that city.

P S A L M
Psalm 66: – a, 4- , 6-7a
R: Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
1 Shout joyfully to God, all you on earth, 2 sing praise to the glory of his name; proclaim his glorious praise. 3 Say to God, “How tremendous are your deeds!” (R) 4 “Let all on earth worship and sing praise to you, sing praise to your name!” 5 Come and see the works of God, his tremendous deeds among the children of Adam. (R) 6 He has changed the sea into dry land; through the river they passed on foot; therefore let us rejoice in him. 7 He rules by his might forever. (R)

G O S P E L
The ultimate vindication for men and women of faith is the promise of the life to come. Faith helps make our worldly concerns seem small compared to the hope of heaven. Let us therefore fix our eyes on the things that await us in eternity rather than the things of earth.
John 6: -40
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. 36 But I told you that although you have seen [me], you do not believe. 37 Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me, 38 because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me. 39 And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it [on] the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.”
my reflections
think:Let us focus on the things that await us in eternity rather than the things of this earth.

Joke Time!!

Cryptographers

A newly appointed cryptographer attends a lunch meeting with his peers, who are going around a circle telling jokes.

One of the cryptographers shouts “12”, and everyone starts laughing.

Another person shouts “34”, which is received with more laughter.

The new cryptographer asks one of the people “why is everyone laughing?” to which he responds “instead of taking the time to tell the whole joke, we just assign each joke a number and instead say that number”.

When it’s the new cryptographers turn, he says “-22”, to which everyone bursts in laughter.

One of them shouts, “i haven’t heard that one before!”

It’s Joke time again!!

Say a Little Prayer

Squirrels had overrun three churches in town. After much prayer, the elders of the first church determined that the animals were predestined to be there. “Who are we to interfere with God’s will?” they reasoned. Soon, the squirrels multiplied.

The elders of the second church, deciding that they could not harm any of God’s creatures, humanely trapped the squirrels and set them free outside of town. Three days later, the squirrels were back.

It was only the third church that succeeded in keeping the pests away. The elders baptized the squirrels and registered them as members of the church. Now they only see them on Christmas and Easter.

Tibet monks disrupt Chinese media tour

BEIJING, A group of 15 Tibetan monks disrupted a Chinese government-led media tour Wednesday, calling out to journalists for the return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet. The episode – the second in as many weeks- took place in Xiahe (Gansu), outside the monastery of Labrang.

The monks, bearing Tibetan flags, attempted to speak to the 20 Chinese and foreign journalists, shouting “The Dalai Lama has to come back to Tibet. We are not asking for Tibetan independence, we are just asking for human rights, we have no human rights now,” AsiaNews reported Wednesday.

Some of the monks covered their faces. Last month the Labrang monastery was at the heart of protests that began March 14 in the capital Lhasa.

Since then Beijing isolated Tibet and Chunese areas with Tibetan populations, banning all visitors and journalists, except for guided tours. Two weeks ago a group of monks disrupted a journalist tour in Lhasa, accusing the Chinese government of lies and crying out that there is no religious freedom in Tibet.

In a press conference Wednesday in the capital, the head of government for the autonomous region of Tibet, Qiangba Puncong, said police arrested 953 people for participating in the Lhasa uprising. China maintains the revolt caused 19 deaths, all Chinese, but the Tibetan government in exile puts the toll at 140 Tibetans at least.
