6 Tips for Hiring a Contractor

Whether you’re building a house from scratch or just installing a second bedroom upstairs, it’s important to only choose the best in contractors. The right choice can save you hundreds of dollars and untold hours of setbacks! Here are just a few tips for getting your money’s worth in a contractor.

1. Ask for Referrals

Has your neighbor refurbished their living room? Has your aunt re-done the tiles in her bathroom? Who did they call? Ask around for referrals and recommendations. If a contractor has satisfied the people you know, they’ll probably satisfy you as well.

2. Check Their Credentials

Not every state requires their contractors to be licensed, so if you’re concerned about the legitimacy of the people you let into your home, you’ll definitely want to inquire about their licensure. You might also check for any lawsuits or scam alerts put out against the brand.

3. Know How You’ll Be Billed

Different contractors have different ways of charging you. For example, some may ask for a flat fee while others will bill you by the hour. Some companies also charge for estimates while others will allow you to get a free quote after a professional evaluation.

4. Set a Schedule

How long do they think the project will take? Is this a guess or an itinerary they’re willing to put into a contract? What happens if they don’t meet their deadlines? These are all critical questions to ask when you’re working out the finer details of scheduling.

5. Ask About Their Staff

Some contractors will only work a day on your project before handing it over to sub-contractors and other assisting staff. If you’re okay with multiple workers as long as the work gets done, you don’t have to worry about this, but if you only want approved staff on your property, talk about it with your contractor in advance.

6. Get a Guarantee

Never hire anyone without getting a guarantee for their services. This may come in the form of contracts, warranties or insurance policies; all are equally valid, and what’s right for you depends on your specific circumstances. Just make sure you have something to protect you while going into the project.

These are just a few things to keep in mind as you look around for a contractor. Don’t be afraid to take your time and browse your options. The right choice will be one made with caution, confidence and deliberation.
